About The Downham Chamber

Downham Market is well known for its continuing commercial success underwritten by its core strength of independent town centre retailers, service providers located around the town on its industrial estates and business parks and the many home based businesses in its vicinity.

Simply put, Downham Market is a great place to live and work and with its rich history from Saxon times all the way to the present and from now into the future it is also a town with a true community spirit.

This has not changed over the years and it was against that backdrop that the Downham Market and District Chamber of Trade was formed in 1906 by local business people for local business people in their service to the public.

The main goals of the Chambers constitution may best be summarised as follows:

  • To consider and promote all measures as may improve and secure the trading and commercial interests of Downham Market and its neighbourhood.

  • To advance and promote commercial and technical education.

  • To support the principles of fair trading.

  • To create and foster a spirit of goodwill and unity among business people of the town and by meetings, discussions, lectures, debates, conferences and other functions to provide facilities for social intercourse between all members.

  • Furthermore that members should appoint a representative to attend and vote at meetings of the Chamber and every paid up member has the right to submit a motion to be included on the next agenda.

All of these goals are just as relevant now as ever they were – perhaps even more so.

Representatives from the Chamber also meet regularly with members of the Town and Borough Councils to discuss any issues of interest to Chamber members.

Any organisation is only as good as its membership and the Executive Committee has always been made up of volunteers.

It is important that as the Chamber continues to grow that more people with fresh ideas come on to the committee. If you can spare some time come along and see how it works and see how you can play a part in the future of this great Market town.
